Types of boxes you may need and what they're used forWhen you’re purchasing moving boxes, you will see them presented with three inside dimensions in the following order: length, width and height or depth. For example, a moving box with dimensions of 18″ x 14″ x 12″ indicates the box’s length, width and height, from the top down into the box.

Have a look at some common types of boxes you may need and what they’re used for:

Handy moving boxes (12″ x 12″ x 12″) are lightweight, double walled boxes. They are perfect for packing up all the items left until last minute. They are also suitable for personal items that you’d like to keep close to you during your move.

Small boxes (18″ x 13″ x 13″) are ideal for smaller, heavier items like books, CDs, dishes, fragile and small appliances, lamps, etc. Due to its compact size this type of box can be easily lifted and carried. It also fits nicely into car back seats.

Short boxes (10″ x 18″ x 18″) are the ideal size and shape for packing up breakables such as china, glassware or electronics. The flat, shallow shape helps pack fragile items widthways rather than on top of each other. Be careful to not overfill the boxes, as over packing can result in dropped boxes and shattered items.

Large boxes (20″ x 18″ x 18″) are general-purpose boxes, ideal for larger, chunkier, medium weight items like lamps, linens, pillows, toys and larger kitchen appliances.

Long boxes (36″ x 18″ x 10″) provide ideal storage for blankets, linens and clothing items. The lay down shape allows contents to be laid flat and packed with minimal folding and rolling, which protects items from excessive creasing. Just remember not to over pack this box as it cannot withstand heavy items.

Tall boxes (18″ x 18″ x 30″) are perfect for packing oversized, odd shaped items that are light to medium weight.

Wardrobe boxes (20″ x 18″ x 48″) are extra strong tall boxes. They include a hanging rail and are great for hanging closet items that you can’t pack flat. Some movers use these boxes to move chandeliers or delicate wind chimes that are better to move hanging than flat. Just remember that these boxes can become heavy and take up a lot of room.

Computer boxes (22″ x 22″ x 22″) are weather/moisture resistant and made of double walled high strength cardboard. They are used for securely packing away your computer, monitor, keyboard and associated equipment.

Archive boxes (15.5″ x 12″ x 10″) are deigned for document storage when moving or storing files and paperwork.

Picture / mirror boxes (49″ x 3.5″ x 37″) are designed to handle framed pictures, artwork and mirrors. The double walled carton protects the items during transit.

There is a variety of sizes and types of moving boxes to choose from. You have to select the ones that fit your specific needs. Moving companies also provide moving kits that include most of the boxes and packing supplies required for packing your household goods.
